Behind the Design of 1801
In 2023, we were given the opportunity to purchase the house at 1801 N. Broadway Shawnee, Ok. Restoring a home so stately, with all its rich history, is the very foundation that our business was built upon. With that, we knew what we were being called to do.
Throughout the year we revisited the past and worked endlessly to recapture historical moments. We wanted to infuse them back into what stands today in hopes of continuing the legacy the family began in 1898.
Come on in!
Built in 1898, this custom home was the heart of 160 acres of farmland influencing a grand design of Queen Anne Victorian and American Farmhouse. The round front turret and decorative wood detailing is very distinctive for Queen Anne, while Farmhouse elements were just as present in the wrap around front and screened in back porch, green roof, and intricate wood craftmanship throughout.
At the beginning of this project I took the time to study not only the elements of these styles, but the home itself. I would sit in each room, observing every detail until it lent a design direction. The more we peeled back the layers, the more I discovered. This home was grand in size, yes, but it's story was a much simpler version.
Some of those characteristics are pine floors throughout, each plank holding it's own character, a tiny kitchen with one set of cabinets and a butcher block countertop, a single bathroom with a cast iron tub, large floor to ceiling windows that allowed the natural light to pour in, screen doors that slammed every time someone entered, and overall and sense of a storied home.
While I definitely wanted to elevate some spaces to create a more functional and utilitarian design, I also wanted to honor the simplicity of the past. With sprinkles of history scattered throughout the decor I think we accomplished what needed to be done, the restoration story of 1801.
Original materials in the home include:
Hardwood floors throughout
Stone from the grounds were dug up and used to create a focal feature to pay homage to the wall surrounding the estate
Cast iron claw foot tub
Wood paneling and trim work
Interior door hardware
Front entry and side door
Butcher block countertop
Furnishings and decor was hand selected and curated to implement an environment that would serve a family well.
We hope to see you soon at the open house of 1801!
